Yep we call those “Project Leads”. We have “DRI” down to the individual task now.

I also think it's heavily inspired by Amazon's "Single Threaded Leadership" and around the idea that the DRI should act as more of a General Manager rather than PM.

Typically, yes it's a PM. I guess it's because the PM orgs and the Eng orgs don't always line up perfectly, so it's creating one meta person responsible for the outcomes across orgs if that makes sense.

We should probably just call it Business Lead and define it as the directly responsible person for some outcome, which would probably solve the problem since most people wouldn't call themselves that.

It tends to mean project lead down to the team-level, which I do think is a valuable concept, but ultimately different from DRI which is required to coordinate larger organizations for a business outcome.

We recently adopted Directly Responsible Individual (DRI) as a concept. Now everyone's a DRI. We have several "DRIs" for certain projects, which I think defeats the purpose (a single accountable person). Generally, think it's a good thing to have, but overuse waters it down.
