What’s your favorite untranslatable / indirectly translated word from another language? Two of my picks:
- Komorebi (Japanese for the sunlight filtering through tree leaves)
- Saudade (Portuguese word for melancholic longing for something precious that is now absent)

man komorebi, bloody great word.
my eng equivalent wound be "dappled sunlight". dapple sounds like water in a stream, which is what the play of shadows through the branches looks like. just wonderful.

Gorgeous! Yes, my go-to translation of it is “dappled sunlight” as well. I admire komorebi and similar words as precise yet poetic environmental observation (the opposite of which would be theguardian.com/books/2015/jan…)
