A colleague emailed that ritual female genital cutting is "patriarchy incarnate" w. only goal to "destroy female sexuality." In my work, I argue *all* non-consensual genital cutting is morally wrong if not medically necessary. But the patriarchy argument is extremely problematic:

And in response to a separate claim that ritual FGC is done without pain control in a medically inadequate setting, etc., I argued that playing into this stereotype as grounds for why FGC is wrong (rather than the lack of consent) will backfire, and is already beginning to: pic.twitter.com/Cfoyn1c3NH

Even if it's women controlling it, for purposes of prestige and empowerment, it's still wrong.

My entire body of work is dedicated to arguing that medically unnecessary genital cutting is wrong if non-consensual.

I've been collecting (bad) reasons for FGC since May 2010, and "to destroy female sexuality" has not yet been offered by its advocates. The nearest have been "to tame their wild libido" kinds of thing.
