There can be a huge cost implementing too many rules that restrict behavior. When you be very careful about how we legislate science. Sometimes we just have to accept that there is no ideal solution and deal with the costs and benefits

Exactly. We can't assume that everyone is in the same place to feel comfortable being open about their opinions when it comes to high stakes issues.

What the hell is this take? Do you live in a cave? Literally hundreds of bills have been passed by the house that are just dead on the senate floor.
Tell me David, did it hurt when they installed the brain chip? Is that an outpatient procedure now?

It's an interesting question.. how to split the cost pie. If AI becomes unpopular, Tesla could shift many of the costs onto other systems, i.e. the cameras are for security, the GPU is for dumb navigation aids and playing games on the center console, etc. Waymo can't do that

You think it's only 600M? If so, they've done pretty well in comparison to Waymo. Although Tesla doesn't need to count the cost of the car itself into that figure so I guess it makes sense.

Tesla apparently is planning to divert their legal exposure for self-driving car accidents onto the owners by claiming it's the owners' responsibility.
This is shameless and awful. I hope the courts teach them what ethics classes could not.

Tesla's attempt to farm out their legal exposure onto owners is shameful and I really hope it blows up in their faces.

Sure, I wasn't suggesting that he become a focus of one's political charity, but even a token amount can add to the "new donors" statistic. And he's now going to be fighting his own party within the state of utah so I think that's worth a few bucks.

I'm just commenting on the incentive structure, which is that bigger and/or slower simulations are less likely to receive scrutiny when there is no budget for quality control. Without making specific accusation it seems possible that some people could exploit this.

This is a pretty apt quote. We recently went to check the code repository for a paper because we were curious and it told us that it would take a week to run. This situation seems to incentivize posting bloated simulations because it makes volunteer quality control difficult twitter.com/Sociopathblog/…

If you feel powerless about the direction US politics are going, you can do something right now by donating to the Jones and Romney campaigns. New donations today, even small ones, will do far more to help change perception than tweets in your echo chamber. Do it, fix things.

This exactly. They are playing with such a weak hand. They have control over 1/6 of the government right now and are still managing to manipulate the national narrative.
How can one expect them to be in control of the situation?
