I've written to , Sec of State at , asking him to look into the appalling access restrictions at . De facto closure is having a catastrophic effect on the production of historical works. If you care about history and agree with me, then please RT.

Here's a scholarly tip. If anyone is looking for a corker subject for a book or dissertion, the papers of colonial administrator Charles Partridge at Ipswich Archives (much uncatalogued) & British Museum offer virgin territory, inc. at least one love letter from a young soldier.

Don't let the baby face fool you. One of the most politically dangerous figures of the twentieth century, honours broker Maundy Gregory, seen here as a dewy 27 year old theatrical entrepreneur. Soon he would be flashing diamond cufflinks and paying off homosexual blackmailers.

I am in awe of my talented colleagues and as we rehearse our play "The Trial of Donald Wolfit" ... We just added an extra show and it's already half sold. So proud.

"My darling Pretty". So Lord Alfred Douglas referred to Maurice Schwabe, pictured here in full fig. His life was – as a fragrant authoress once referred to a gentleman of similar propensities – "an intangible chaos of unclean suggestion." Our fave phrase of the moment!

Here hangs a tale. The Navy Bath House (1907) by Eugène Jansson. Despite being a star of Stockholm's Thiel Gallery, in the 1970s when it was learnt Jansson was gay, the painting was warehoused and rarely shown. Only since 2015 has it been on permanent display.

Society held no illusions over the 1913 alliance of David Rocksavage to heiress Sybil Sassoon. "When an Earl marries a wealthy baronet's sister, romance doesn't usually count for much," a columnist coolly observed, bitchily adding the Registry Office setting was a piquant touch.

Click the image to see the headline, and how one Society magazine announced the engagment of Victoria (Vita) Sackville-West to Harold Nicholson in 1913. Someone wasn't fooled!
