Eating bacon bagels on the 171 bus, listening to Johnny Cash while reading Hannah Arendt, the kid next to me playing dubstep on his telephone.

I haven’t commented on the content for precisely that reason, although I noticed a few problematic points and inaccuracies in the bits I did get through. As you’ve read it, could you do me a favour? Tell me what his key points are: if you had to summarise it, what’s he saying?

Yes it is super important to me - it’s one of the issues I spent the most time reading about – and yet even I found it so tendentious that I really struggled, so I am a little dubious that all the people who are recommending it actually got to the end.

Thanks! I misremembered slightly. Still an element of using the Jewish interviewee’s family Holocaust story to dishonestly win trust - deeply unethical.

There’s a great thread from a while back by about the experience of the interviewer using the Shoah to entrap interviewees but I can’t find it

If you don’t know about how the government and its allies militias operate in this war maybe inform yourself before weighing job. And the idea that the only choice is ISIS or Assad is absurd. Syrian people deserve freedom from dictatorship *and* ISIS.

Assad’s Syria is 125th out of 152 in the UN Gender Equality Index, 133rd out of 144 in the WEP Global Gender Gap Index. Sharia law governs marriage. Marital rape is not a crime. Child marriage is legal. Rape is used by the government as a weapon of war.

You must have a lot of time on your hands to get through a 12 thousand word blogpost about the host of Countdown. I started but lost the will to live a couple of thousand in.

As feared Venezuelan authorities have seized the leader of the National Assembly, the social democrat Juan Guaidó. He is from UK Labour's sister party so we can expect them to stand up for him, yes?

Yes, exactly. There’s only one really plausible explanation for Israel being seen as the sole evil occupier but not Sri Lanka, China, Turkey, Russia, India, Pakistan and other such larger states with settler-colonial occupations.

I think this concise tweet perfectly sums up what’s wrong with Shaun’s post:

The Tibet one is pretty ironic given that all of Israel’s crimes in Palestine are also committed by China in Tibet, for roughly the same period.

Sure. 1) implies Jewish allegations of A/S are made to defend Israel (dual loyalty), not in good faith; 2) implies the belief that racist criticisms of Israel are, well, racist is dishonest & in bad faith; 3) plays to old antisemitic narratives of secret Jewish financial power.

Really good piece by Javier Sethness in on how fascists can get a platform on “alt” media channels
