I would have made constants BOARD_WIDTH and BOARD_HEIGHT, and replaced number 4 with BOARD_WIDTH - 3.
I would also break early on empty fields when checking for four in a row, but that's not strictly a pedagogical thing.

concept for #gamedesign/#gamedev: A turn timer with explicit "thinking time" on top of execution time. Every turn has a separate "thinking time period" (defaults: disabled or 30s per turn) during which you can't do anything. If you move a unit, regular turn time starts.
