This text, out of the blue, means: a) wrong number b) someone’s eavesdropping on the team c) the butcher got hundreds of pounds of steak and divvied it up among the dogs. They bark when they see his truck but are quiet while they chew. He loves watching dogs eat.

Grinch and Kiwi are besties now and play all day long when they’re not running. Here’s Kiwi getting upset because Grinch came in for cuddles instead of chasing him around.
A black and brown dog stands in the snow with his head lifted and eyes wide open, barking dramatically. In front of him, another black dog, Grinch, presses his forehead into the legs of someone kneeling in the snow in snow pants. With his head down and his butt up, Grinch is about 10% of the way into a somersault.

He’s been running with her his whole life, but Clem still gets silly and proud when he leads with his mama.
A dog team stands on a snowy trail, backlit by the headlamps from a snowmobile. In lead, Pepé, a gray dog with a white stripe on her forehead, stands calmly and solidly on all four feet. Slightly behind her, her orange son Clem prances with one paw up, his chin lifted, and a mischievous smirk on his face. Behind them, Dora stands silhouetted.

Grinch doesn’t know why the snowmobile tipped over but he’s very excited to get to pee on the bottom of it

But, eventually, it becomes important to find joy in new or different things. Maybe your old thing, modified, maybe something new. Thinking here about sweet Boudica and how running needed to look different for her after she was injured, or how the retirees adapt to free runs.

I want to add one thing -- melancholy, perhaps, but true, I think -- and that is: our bodies are aging all the time. Our limits and abilities change, including our body's ability to bounce back from trauma. And sometimes trauma can make returning to "normal" impossible.

I have to dig out all the gates in the dog yard and Flame and Jenga are being extremely helpful by standing in front of me wherever I go
The photo is taken looking down at the snowy ground in front of a kennel gate. There’s a person’s legs, and a big shovel that they’re holding. Two dogs are standing calmly in exactly the place that the snow needs to be shoveled from

Blizzard is laughing at me because the snow is covered in solid ice and he just watched me slide across half the yard
A hand reaches out and pets the cheek of a gray and tan husky with his paws up on a boulder, head tossed back, with a silly closed-mouth grin on his face. They’re in sunlit yard with a playground in the background. It appears to be covered with a layer of crusty snow, but in fact it is secretly an ice rink.

Pepé wants you to know that Leap isn’t actually faster than she is. She says Leap took a shortcut and she and Tenzing didn’t.
Three dogs run down a snow-covered road in a bare forest. The dog in front, Leap, is black and has her head down and her tail up. Two dogs in the distance behind her are in top gear trying to catch up.

Thank you all so much for your incredibly kind words about Refried. ❤️ Things are peaceful in the retirement yard. Hari hasn’t been hungry lately but today he’s all about that venison. Jenga’s here for cuddles and Grinch is diligently making his rounds. Sending you all our love.
A snowy scene under a blue sky with a red barn in the background. In the foreground, a brown dog perched on a pile of boulders as a hand pets her cheek. A black dog, Grinch, pees on the boulders with his tail sticking straight up. In the background, a brown wolfy dog enjoys gnawing.

Hari is mourning. We are staying close with him and trying to support him every way we can. He does seem to get comfort from being with Grinch so we are making sure Grinch stays with him, too.

Ohhh goodness. RIP sweet girl. I hope Hari is able to adjust before too long, I’m sure it’s hard on him. 💔
