Eovaldi has been filthy against the Yankees since his trade from the Rays to the . He's 2-0 with a 0.31 ERA in five starts (includes postseason). Eovaldi has allowed 1 earned run in 29 innings. The Yankees are 14-for-99 against him. That would have been the lead tonight.

Chris Sale might be the last player to make excuses. He's been brutal on himself while evaluating his starts to date. On why the left-hander might be closer than he thinks to a breakthrough.

Cora on the Rays -- 'As always, we’ve got to go down there and try to win the series. You win two out of three or you sweep them and you move on. That’s the goal in every series. We haven’t done it yet, so maybe it’s time to do it in Tampa.'

Cora on potentially adding second base help in Tampa -- 'I think so, yes. Hopefully not. Hopefully I’m wrong on this one. Hopefully tomorrow (Pedroia) flies to Tampa and he’s ready to go. But it looks that way.'

Cora on Brock Holt (right eye) -- 'Yesterday he didn’t feel great. He went to see the eye doctor – probably to get some other lens. He’ll get back tomorrow or Friday and see where he’s at. Yesterday was three at-bats, and two of them he didn’t feel great about.'

Cora on Nathan Eovaldi -- 'I think the starting rotation is getting to where we wanted. He threw the ball well. Velocity was good. He grinded out a few innings, but the splitter was better. The breaking ball was better. He finished up with the good fastball.'

Cora on Pedroia -- 'I was surprised that he came up to me and told me that, but at least he was honest. We’ll see what happens. I really don’t know. He was a little bit down. I haven’t seen him like that. Hopefully it’s nothing serious and something where he got scared.'

Cora on Pedroia -- 'For him to come up to me and tell me how he felt, I know a lot of people think he’s going to push, push and push and not be smart about it. He understands where he’s at and how he felt. I’ve got to do what I have to do to take care of the player.'

Alex Cora on Dustin Pedroia -- 'In the first swing of the at-bat he felt something weird in his knee. He finished the at-bat, he came up to me and he didn’t feel right there. I decided to take him out. He’ll see the doctor tomorrow and we’ll see where we’re at.'

Eovaldi -- 'Just the side work that we’ve been putting in between the starts, I feel like we’re getting to where we need to be with mechanics. The side work has been really good. I was able to take that into the game tonight and keep them off balance.'

Nathan Eovaldi -- 'I feel like the pitch mix and using their aggressiveness against them. I was able to elevate when I needed to and get swings-and-misses. The splitter felt really good tonight, so I was able to use that off those pitches.'

Workman on Tampa Bay -- 'They all count the same whether it’s September or April. It doesn’t matter. All the wins and losses go into the same categories. It’s a big series. We’re not performing like we need to. It’s a big series for us to go out, play well and right the ship.'

Workman -- 'We’ve been struggling as a team. We were in position to win one today and I came in there and loaded the bases and got one out. It’s definitely difficult to swallow that.'

Brasier -- 'We all know what we have here. We’re just trying to roll through this tough time and get back to winning like last year. I know it’s hard to do what we did, but everybody knows the group of guys we’ve got in here can do it.'

Brasier on where he wanted the 0-2 fastball to Gardner -- 'Not where it was. Had a plan to go after him, got him right where I wanted to get him and didn’t execute a pitch.'

Ryan Brasier -- 'The bullpen guys, it’s our job to come in and get outs and hold the lead. I made a bad pitch on a good count for me and it bit me in the butt.'

I'd like to see fewer arbitration years and earlier free agency. Players get paid sooner, clubs don't commit to years being paid well after someone's prime.
