I really enjoyed this series. Jemisin is a very engaging writer and although a couple of the stylistic choices that she makes in both this and in the Inheritance Trilogy grate on me a bit, these are very cool books, and I'm definitely excited to see what she does next!

We have really enjoyed reading through this series! Next month we will be reading Tom Stoppard's The Coast of Utopia, supported by Isaiah Berlin's book Russian Thinkers, so we're switching gears entirely!

Bill and Joel finished The Stone Sky, the last book in NK Jemisin's Broken Earth trilogy! Does it stick the landing? Also a brief spoiler-free discussion about the meta-discourse surrounding Game of Thrones!

Always pronounced it like “sneeze,” but that was clearly a silly joke. Probably usually said “super nintendo” when I didn’t feel like goofing around

without going into any detail there’s a property dispute in front of my judge right now that caused him (who never does anything like this) to admonish all parties from the bench about their recordkeeping

The bit towards the end (ca. 7:40, though you gotta listen from ca. 7:05 to get it) when he just comes roaring back in with God Save the Tsar out of absolutely nowhere has got to be one of the most obnoxious moments in Romantic music and I love it to death

Should we be barking? Should we not be barking? Are we under attack? Are we playing? Why is everything so loud?

::sigh:: I should probably just be grateful for all the "read these if you miss GOT" articles listing my books -- like 6 in the last 2 days. But I can't help thinking that my writing is nothing like GOT's. I write an entertaining story, sure, but not GOTish. Mine's way weirder.

In other news as of yesterday I've finished all six of Shirley Jackson's novels and both of her memoirs, and though I'll wait to try to say much until after I finish the Ruth Franklin biography of her, she was one helluva writer

Now that you’ve finished , which historically-inspired prestige miniseries should you try next? Well, I made you a little chart. Wolf Hall is 6 eps and Terror 10, so either way you’re not going to lose years in watching.

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a fantasy creature in a movie or TV show feel quite so real and dangerous

Anyway I’m going to bed, but regardless of anything else, Drogon is a triumph of animation and whatever else they did to make him work and everyone involved in all of his stuff these last few seasons should be immensely proud of themselves.

this is gonna be like when the last jedi came out and I thought it was a fun but flawed movie and some number of chuckleheads hated it for all the wrong reasons and I found myself defending it all the time and wound up looking like I liked it a lot more than I did
