New paper out in JEB on phenotypic noise and innovation. First non-review, non-special-issue pub from me after a long dry spell so I'm pretty cheerful to see it in print!

Portrait of a Denisovan? Reconstructing the anatomy of an extinct hominin based only on DNA methylation sounds like the stuff of science fiction. But that is the bold claim of a new paper published in Cell. unpacks the study for :

I am extremely excited about this work on the way natural selection succeeds and crucially fails to weed out deleterious mutations in cancer due to the constraints posed by linkage and Hill-Robertson interference. 1/n

Ok, so what is the puzzle? First some background. Cancer sequencing showed that most cancers accumulate many mutations in many genes. Some of these mutations are likely to be advantageous for the tumors (they generated drivers) but many are thought to be mere passengers. 7/n

Still nothing better than waking up to a “paper accepted” email 🙌🏾 Even though it’s one big emotional roller coaster at times, I am having so much fun with this job.

Jews, race, scientific racism, penis size, Mankind Quarterly, The Pioneer Fund, Richard Lynn, and more. A long thread, but worth it. Bad science, real racism, and a cast of ridiculous fixated pseudoscientists, for whom racism and penises are the enduring passion of their lives.

Please don't argue with racists, it only encourages them. Getting people riled up online is one of the tactics of the far-right and white supremacists. When you retweet or comment in outrage, that makes them stronger by giving them visibility. Ignore them and they lose.

A new mathematical model picks out cancer “driver” mutations from less important “passenger” ones more accurately than previous models. It analyzed genomic “hotspots”, where mutations tend to recur, using sequencing data from about 10,000 patients.
