This feels important. Like Powers of 10, but for Bill Gates and Jeff Bezos and Elon Musk.

This is a terrific visualization. And even though I consider myself pretty numerate, boggles my mind.

I've generally been neutral on Buttigieg, but this here is some straight-up toxic bullshit.

I originally read this as "Is flying good for the plane?" and thought it was a much, much more interesting meditation on the inner lives of planes. Which, like, maybe isn't so far from your suspicion that a scheming private jet wrote the article. So... ✈️🤔

Today is Trans Day of Remembrance. We honor the lives of transgender people who have died this year, including 22 Black trans women who have been murdered.

If life gives you lemons, remember that they are the result of humans crossbreeding bitter oranges with citrons and do not occur naturally. Therefore life never gave you any lemons to begin with; we made them up.

As the person who proofreads JCMS every issue, and is responsible for ensuring consistent application of CMOS and house style, this gives me delight.

This story is appalling. This is my campus and this could easily have been one of my students. You don’t arrest people in crisis. You help them.

This is the most cyberpunk thing I've seen for a while: Chilean protesters using lasers to take down a drone.

A testing-centered regime is not about education, it is about producing hierarchy. More than that, it's about blaming those at the bottom of the hierarchy for their own condition after setting them up to fail. It's a technology for destroying empathy.

You know what would help me, as a college educator? If the lower levels of education were not a nightmarish apartheid dystopia where racial and economic inequality mean that some students come to college ready to hit the ground running and others can barely construct a sentence.

I’ve never been so deeply uncomfortable as an Indigenous scholar as I am here at watching people who claim to do activist or at least somewhat justice oriented scholarship so uncritically enjoy tourism here, the industry most directly tied to Hawaiian dispossession.

Earlier today Bill Gates in an interview said he doesn't like Elizabeth Warren's wealth tax because he thinks he will have to pay "$100 billion" and he will have to do "a little math"(?). That sounded wrong, so I did the math. Text version:

Also, I think the fact that Gates et al. are "struggling" to give away their wealth also points up the fact that their wealth is now big enough that it's no longer really theirs; capital really does have its own dark metabolism.
