Our team use a range of activities in their work; this is a gratitude jar for a child’s therapeutic box. Each day they’ll add in something they’re grateful for in on a piece of paper. On harder days they can open up the jar to remind themselves of the positives

Regional Practice Co-Ord went through the NRM line by line advising on which offences would apply and how they could be argued - but it was deemed not enough evidence. Although the victim didn’t need to testify so that was a positive

Trafficking charges taken to CPS who considered there to not be enough to pursue conviction. positive.

A horrific example of the lengths traffickers will go to in exploiting children, although not all control is this explicit. Our East Mids Regional Practice Co-Ord was involved in safeguarding this child.

Our ICTG worker in Greater Manchester supported a young person to go swimming this week; an activity they really enjoy that they haven’t done for a year. Getting young people out and about taking part in activities is one of the best bits of our work with young people

Absolutely agree. Absence of hard evidence of force (eg texts) doesn’t mean it’s not there. The force is often subtle and implicit, and sometimes not recognised by yp as force at all. We argue this time & time again when challenging negative decisions.

It’s an interesting one, and would be good to see some attempts to get past CPS for case law precedent to be set around it. I’d be surprised if it got to court under MSA without force/coercion element but there is every chance I could be wrong...! And I hope I am!

Otherwise they would be ‘choice’ or Sexual Offences Act, rather than falling under MSA?

There has to be some degree of coercion or force to satisfy definition and threshold for trafficking (albeit it this doesn’t need to be proved for children due to age being barrier to consent to exploitation). Otherwise unlikely that trafficking charges would be admissible??

Trafficking definition requires some degree of force or coercion, in order to meet Palermo Protovol and Modern Slavery Act definitions. BUT this force & coercion is so much more complex than a straight forward threat, so is often missed and kids considered to be making a choice

All exploitation involves some degree of force, although it can be subtle & not always immediately recognisable. It’s often not obvious physical force, which is often what is looked for, meaning that lack of physical force leads to minimisation of risk & “lifestyle choice” labels

Agree with what you are getting at but by definition all sexual exploitation and trafficking are forced. There are various arguments regarding sex work & choice, but sexual exploitation and trafficking both involve force of some kind
