Jo and I are on the same page—blind memorization is bad. Once you have a conceptual understanding at a simpler level (4 X 2 = 8, 4 X 3 = 12, etc), memorization of the larger times tables (9 X 8 = 72) can grow from that conceptual understanding. Internalization of patterns is key

As you said "Multidimensional practice that shows an idea in different ways, is what is important." That is exactly what I've been promoting, Jo--I'm so glad you agree. And as I noted in the op-ed, this kind of practice is good for both girls and boys.
