We met the kick-off goal! Coding starts in January :-) Please do continue to support the Patreon. At this level I can put enough work into the project to make it worth doing, but if I can scale it up to full-time things will be that much faster!

Hey y’all, do your part and enable Exposure Notifications for automatic contact tracing and alerts. It’s built into iOS. It requires your state to support it, and Washington just rolled it out!

I blogged about lock-free programming last night, based on my ARM reordering tweet of two weeks ago. TL;DR - ARM's weak memory model may expose some broken code, but that code was already broken.

This is the real deal. Reverse engineering and writing Linux drivers for everything from a proprietary boot environment to an entire GPU architecture, single-handedly? Few people can claim to be capable of such a feat. marcan is one of them.

Help make Linux on Apple Silicon Macs a reality! Patreon is up: I'm pausing billing until I get $4k/mo of commitment, so you won't be charged until there is enough momentum to make the project viable.

Someone on Amazon is making money off 5G conspiracy theorists by selling a $90 "EMF blocker" for WiFi routers. The best part is the reviews complaining that it reduced their WiFi signal 🤣

Another short thread, inspired by a private conversation: I have more hobbies than I should, and if there is one consistent theme I see is that the community is all that matters in the end.

“Do what you love and you’ll never work a day in your life” No matter how much I love something, if you put a deadline and/or requirements on it, it’s work and my love of it declines. Let’s stop glorifying “doing what you love professionally” as “not working”. 1/3

A friend asked me what high schools should teach to avoid or undo the current crisis in which we find ourselves. I think the ideal set of classes would look something like this: 🧵 1/

Stop what you’re doing and bear witness to an artist with astounding mathematical dexterity, actually explaining his craft like he wishes nothing more than for you to learn this magic. There is so much right here. I’ve been exposed to this goop for decades, now I get it. WOW.

Who needs some burrowing owls? I know I do. I drove down to the Salton Sea today to see how they're doing. Here's a thread of the owls I saw.

1/ Six Flags New Orleans is one of the youngest of the abandoned places I've visited, and at 140 acres, certainly one of the larger ones. Open for only 5 years, it's been a ruin for longer than it was in use. What happens after you abandon an entire amusement park?

Wow! Just captured my most detailed International Space Station lunar transit photo to date. Crew Dragon Resilience is barely distinguishable at the top-center of the station. Taken with a Orion 10” Dobsonian telescope + 2x Barlow lens on a Nikon D500 in Lakeland, Florida.

A photo of Apple’s personal computer CPU family tree…from left to right: 6502 (Apple II), 68k (Lisa), PowerPC (Power Macintosh), x86 (iMac), and now Apple silicon (MacBook). These are the first production computers from Apple using each of these instruction set architectures.
