The very idea of leaving the Catholic Church because of the sins of its members or the failures of parts of its institution is deeply anti-Gospel. If Christ doesn’t reject His Body because of its sins and failures, what gives any of us the right to? It’s not a golf club.

Didn't he say his kingdom was like a catch of fish containing both good and bad?

After an unpleasant incident with a family when I was a baby priest, when they threatened “we’ll take our money elsewhere” I was spotted in the street looking glum. It was Wigan. A man said “tha dusn’t give up Eatin’ meat jus’ cos’ tha dusn’t like ‘t’ bootcher” (translation next)

At some point, after being reminded of your unworthiness day after day, year after year, people get the message that they aren’t wanted. Perhaps it’s not the members rejecting the institution but the converse.

Translation: “one doesn’t stop eating meat simply because one doesn’t like the butcher”. Great advice for a young priest, but also for anyone who, like me, has never had a crisis of faith in God, but has suffered at the hands of some of the folk who work for Him. God loves you.

I think has it right when he says: I am not in the Catholic Church, the Catholic Church is in me.
