My friend is at a conference. It offers a discounted 'low income' rate. In return for this rate delegates are invited to do 'chores' at the conference (like sell the books of the Profs, set up, pack down, provide roving mic etc). I'm aghast. What a grim, feudal, academic culture.

Much like the fact that many past societies assumed responsibility for caring for the sick and old doesn't mean that the welfare states of social-democratic Western Europe or state-socialist Eastern Europe weren't historically unprecedented.

I've been complicit in pushing this narrative but this is a great rebuttal. Ultimately I think it's more useful to emphasize the *scale* of today's border regime, which is larger and affects orders of magnitude more people than ever before, rather than its formal features.

it's funny how people writing in French in the 18th century used way fewer accents than is considered grammatical today

In the 1980's China allowed relatively free expression of Uyghur culture. This is Wugusi kehan de chuanshuo - The Legend of Wugusi Khan, one of the great poetic epics of Uyghur history, translated by Geng Shimin, and printed in 1981. It could not be published or even sold today.

As one example, Americans are one of the most rule-following societies on Earth, but also tell themselves they are free spirits and that the country is built on rebellion and individualism

Otto Neurath’s 1930 cross-country classification of political parties, all situated on a respective bourgeois-proletarian axis. Particularly appreciate the clarity for the American case.
