Richard Nixon resigned because Republican senators told him he had to resign. Does anyone truly doubt that, in today's system, with this Republican Party in control of the Senate, he survives? And if so, what does that say about the American political system?

American democracy has not "failed" yet; but it is urgent that we address some of these problems, and learn to think about democratic reform as an ongoing priority. In good news: there's a lot we can fix w/o amending the Constitution. E.g.:

I was honored to testify in the Maryland House & Senate yesterday about foreign influence in elections. Momentum is growing for a ban on political spending by foreign-influenced US corporations. To get smart on this issue in 2 minutes, see the factsheet in the next tweet.

The House passed a bill that would help fix this problem and empower the Federal Election Commission to enforce the law ➡️ the Act. Mitch McConnell won't allow a vote in the Senate, but it should be a top priority for whoever comes next.

Trump is coordinating with a super PAC. Such coordination is illegal. It it the last line of defense against unlimited big-donor money flowing into political campaigns.

Great move by to set up an advisory redistricting commission. WI is one of the most gerrymandered states in the country and this could put pressure on the legislature to do the right thing.

I know it's an outrageous outrage to suggest Republican senators are engaged in a cover-up but... if they don't call Bolton after this, they are most definitely engaged in a cover-up

One of the big things standing in the way of sensible gun safety laws? Partisan gerrymandering. , , and explain.

Good piece on the "new frontier in partisanship" that McConnell has brought to the Senate. But characterizing it as "odd" is more than a little understatement. And let's not forget that this is also the guy who pledged never to compromise as soon as Obama was elected.

A congressional watchdog (GAO) just found that the Trump White House’s hold on funding to Ukraine was illegal. This follows on recently released emails that show the White House was told holding the $ was illegal, but kept doing so anyway.

If districts don't accurately reflect the people, our elected representatives aren't going to do what the public wants; on gun violence, and across the full range of issues we care about. 5/5

If we don't get this right, we shouldn't be surprised when legislatures ignore the public -- on important issues like action to prevent gun violence: 4/5

I would just add: banning the use of political data is ALSO BAD. Redistricting commissions need political data in order to draw districts that accurately represent the public--and they should be required to do so. (Here's the longer version 👇) 2/5
