Earlier this evening I spoke via phone with his Highness the Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia, Mohammad bin Salman bin Abdulaziz Al Saud. We discussed security, counterterrorism, market-access to Afghan goods, and Saudi's contribution and role in regional connectivity.

He also lauded the improvements brought into strengthening the capacity of ANDSF. The Secretary was pleased with the improvements in communication between the U.S. and Afghan governments to ensure our efforts on the above issues remain aligned and coordinated.

Given the opportunities and threats, we propose the following. First, to overcome the risk of fragmented approaches to peace, a regional and international coalition for peace should be formed to create a coherent framework for dialogue and negotiation.

We consider the US commitment to a political solution to be credible & are coordinating to build the necessary international consensus on peace. But without a regional consensus on peace & addressing Taliban’s interdependencies with their supporters, breakthroughs will take time.

While there is consensus on the threat of terrorism, sufficient consensus on a regional approach to our collective security and wellbeing is in need of building. Required is an understanding of the drivers and supporting systems to deal with the threat.
