Florida is not alone. Forty-four states and the District of Columbia suspend, revoke or refuse to renew driver’s licenses for unpaid traffic, toll, misdemeanor, and felony fines and fees.

These suspensions not only prevent people from earning the money they need to pay their court debt, but also undercut their ability to support themselves and their families.

In the last few years, a number of states have moved away from this ineffective practice – including Southern states like Texas and Mississippi.

In 2017, over 1 million suspension notices were issued across Florida and the ONLY reason for the suspension was $$. Look at the appendix in the report to see the numbers for your county.

License suspension should be used as a public safety tool – NOT as a debt collection tool. The American Association of Motor Vehicle Administrators has taken a stand against using DL suspension as a debt collection tool.

FFJC is working to end the practice of using DL suspension to punish people who are not able to pay hundreds or thousands of dollars in criminal court debt, the $2 toll violation that ballooned to $300 in fines and fees, or other court fees that are used to fund government.
