Journalists used to provide distribution, so they were pandered to.
Now they simply provide distortion, so they're ignored.
To the formerly pandered, indifference feels like defensiveness, when it's merely the ingratiating mask falling off.

Great observation. I will also add Gell-Mann amnesia for my lack of trust:
"the journalist has absolutely no understanding of either the facts or the issues...
read as if the rest of the newspaper was more accurate about... than the baloney you just read."

"Journalist" is a meaningless term when used in this context. It can be interpreted however the reader wants to elicit a pre-established belief about journalism or specific media outlets.
To say l journalists collectively used to/currently do one or the other is nonsense.
