I just watched it today via Austin Public Library’s streaming, and it was a grainy, medium-res encoding :( Hope this doesn’t end up like Afterlife where I had to buy the Japanese Region 2 DVD to see it looking nice!

I crack up about the story that the “cello cello cello cello” was meant as a placeholder, but they ended up liking it and decided not to hire the strings after all!

my new favorite thing is hitting skip intro right after picard says “space” in the next generation opening. really that’s all they need to say

Nice and simple! If you like this sort of thing, there’s even an entire book about related computer graphics / maze history:

That’s a very ArcimBOLDo statement (a little Mannerist art dad joke, sorry) 🥕🍅🥦

Just learned the amazing word "apophany" from apophenia, the tendency to see patterns when they aren't there, i.e. faces in clouds, nonexistent patterns on the roulette wheel. So an apophany is like an epiphany except you're wrong.

Oh yes, I still talk at people about the Radiolab “Colors” episode, which had so many good mini-stories! Also mantis shrimp!

At the risk of spoiling the fun, I think this phrase is automatically tacked on because there’s a checkbox when you’re reporting a crime (I’ve noticed the weirdness too!)

I just listened to this week’s episode on the book The Secret Lives of Color, so I’ve got blue on the brain as well. I need to pick up this book!

Bonus for having a headline that’s somehow perfectly shaped like the state that it’s talking about!

I’ll put in another vote for The Amber Spyglass. A refutation of Milton (and Tolkien / CS Lewis) by way of William Blake, disguised as a kid’s book. I have a soft spot for the whole trilogy, but the 3rd book pulls it all together.

I just learned this week that etymologically speaking, “ciao” meant “I am your slave” — not sure if this means I’m subservient to HEB or no

If you’re in L.A. between now and April, go see this Hubbard/Birchler piece! They make some of my favorite contemporary art about memory, history, place, cinema, and storytelling. More info here:

I talked to two separate Austinites in the past month who had never heard anything about the tower shooting! (maybe that’s what happens when the University mostly didn’t acknowledge that it happened for ~50 years)

I vote Pacha and Genuine Joe’s. Flightpath if you’re looking for a more-productive:semi-cozy ratio. (RIP Little City, Mojo’s, Metro, original Quack’s, Ruta Maya, and all other bygone cozy Austin coffee shops)

It reminds me of the stories about NYC’s storefront blight, caused by rent spikes but also land owners waiting out for zoning and redevelopment deals. Such a waste.
