As an ex chair of governors of a big comprehensive school in north London, I know how hard it can be to create a safe and productive learning environment for all. Some youngsters can be seriously challenging or need a break from poor peer influences, but we should never off roll.

We need to consider how we give teachers and LSAs more time to spend with the kids on a 1:1 basis. They know the kids best....but resources have been cut and pressure is so great to achieve SATs results that they don’t have time to spend just being with a child who is struggling.

Very good to see that segregated play areas are to be outlawed in London. We now need to see a similar ban across the country with strong processes in place to hold developers to account. Segregating children playing can never be acceptable.

Deprivation is still a really key issue for outcomes in the first 1,001 critical days and thereafter of a child’s life. The fact we don’t talk about this is not only immoral, but wastes time and money later on.
