I was born 11 years after the FDA approved “the pill” & 2 years before Roe v Wade became the law of the land. My generation took our reproductive rights as a given & benefited from our ability to plan our education, our careers & parenthood. We will fight this.

...So on this Mother's Day, I am grateful for the many women and men standing with me at work and at home, and I promise to keep at this fight with all of you to change our culture and our policies to support all of California's working parents.

(5) I'm inspired to make sure all parents have what I had: jobs that offered paid family leave, flexibility, breastfeeding support, & an income to afford good child care, after school programs & summer camps. I was never fired/demoted when my kids got sick & I had to miss work.

(4) We have built an amazing team where we work hard, but also back each other up so we can show up for family events or take time with our partners or friends or just take a break to take care of ourselves.

(3) I was able to work in the private sector over the last few years and, for the first time ever, afford to hire an amazing woman to help me with my kids - and I can pay her a living wage and offer her paid sick days and paid time off because she is a Mom and grandma too.

(2) I have a "village" of friends who do so much from me -- send me videos from the school activities I miss while I'm at work, run to the pharmacy late at night when I'm alone with the kids, or simply show up with food when I'm too tried to figure out what to put on the table.

(1) My kids' Dad has been a co-equal, co-parent from the start & that commitment has never waivered. He solo parents our kids half the time while he is also serving California. Supporting all types of parents at work and the families who help raise their kids makes a difference.

But there are 5 things that allow me to be a good Mom and Chief of Staff, and inspire me to keep at it:

Catastrophic wildfires, struggling schools, the cost crisis that is hitting so many California families are all urgent issues that demand my time. So does building our team, cultivating a healthy workplace & getting to know policy makers in Sacramento.

California has been a state for nearly 169 years. Our 40th Governor was the first Governor to hire a woman to be his Chief of Staff who is also a Mom of school-aged children (me!). I don't want to sugarcoat it: Parenting and being the Chief of Staff isn't easy.

As California goes, so goes the nation. This budget is a reflection of California’s values. Who we are and what we stand for — and we’re making a strong commitment to serving our children, teachers, and families.
