Sweet because: These are signs that NeurIPS is maturing. wrote an article about the community growing up: We’re getting better at diversity/inclusion and taking responsibility for our actions, though there’s still room to grow.

Bayesian methods and causality got a lot of buzz. I was excited about progress in self-supervised learning, while others were excited about federated learning, or using DL to predict biological sequences. Fascinating areas, but the AI community no longer marches in one direction.

The community has grown so much that we no longer coalesce around a small handful of ideas. People now specialize more in verticals, and I felt less of the “core” coming together, which I miss.
