everyone prioritizes different things (family, prestige, money, expertise, love, experiences, so much more) and it's embarrassing that we're all dunking on this dude instead of asking, what if i don't care about being "successful" for your narrow definition of successful?

in all seriousness, while the "must work long hours to become successful" discourse has covered the main argument (yes you can be successful w/ sustainable hours!), we haven't done enough to dispute the unstated premise: "success is what you should be optimizing for in your 20s"

before i moved to singapore, i thought to myself, "it's most likely going to take me longer to get promoted if i do this, and my career won't move as quickly as it would in san francisco" and then i decided i was OK with that and did it anyway. i'm happy.

i'm happy i got away from san francisco because it was eating away at my spirit with this competitive, hustling, one-upping culture. life got a lot easier for me, and although anxiety/depression didn't go away completely, at least i've started feeling like i live for myself.

even if i'm addressing the tiny target demo of the original tweet (young, career stable, financially stable, no family, no disabilities, etc), i still think it's worth introspecting on your own values and what brings you fulfillment. promo isn't going to fill your heart

100% the right take. For me, bank account is one of the lowest things in my definition of success. I'm somebody who takes great pride in my many hobbies. For me, success is having a stable job that can pay for all my bills and leave me with plenty of time to work on my hobbies ☺️

These are the exact thoughts I've been munching in the last couple of days.
IMO the other question is what kind of 'work' do we need to get there. It's not necessarily 'giving up your mental health to make a rich person even richer'.
