In Thiel's "Zero to One" series he spends a whole lecture on something very similar to this... if you're willing to relabel Normal as "indefinite" and Weird as "definite". In his model, the 1950s/1960s zeitgeist (and all actually good startup ideas) involve Definite Optimism.

Maybe, I was thinking of this, but 50s-60s culture is extremely “Normal Optimist” — pull together, conform, make an effort, and we can achieve great things!

Personality-wise my priors are that scientific productivity tends to occur among people who are BOTH open (so they see many "weirdly diverse" things) AND conscientious (so theoretical "abnormalities" worthy of study jump out from the orderly background).

I think the kind of conscientiousness that makes you excel at science is very Normal Pessimist, and the kind of creativity that makes you excel is Weird Optimist. Normal Optimism helps with more political or money-related achievements.

Weird Pessimists, of course, are the overwhelming majority of philosophers and social theorists.
