2x2 idea: weird/normal, optimist/pessimist.

In Thiel's "Zero to One" series he spends a whole lecture on something very similar to this... if you're willing to relabel Normal as "indefinite" and Weird as "definite". In his model, the 1950s/1960s zeitgeist (and all actually good startup ideas) involve Definite Optimism.

Maybe, I was thinking of this, but 50s-60s culture is extremely “Normal Optimist” — pull together, conform, make an effort, and we can achieve great things!

Personality-wise my priors are that scientific productivity tends to occur among people who are BOTH open (so they see many "weirdly diverse" things) AND conscientious (so theoretical "abnormalities" worthy of study jump out from the orderly background).

I think there are important differences between definite/indefinite and normal/weird, which is why it's fun to explore this 2x2. "Unsure about future but expect it to be strange" is weird/indefinite, "Unsure of details but expect present trends to continue" is normal/indefinite.

I should probably think more about "2x2 epistemology"... In the meantime, these all seem "optimistic" :-) Normal & Indefinite: Index Investing Normal & Definite: Engineering Weird & Indefinite: Auftragstaktik Weird & Definite: Utopianism
