You know that Douglas Adams quote about anything invented after your mid -thirties? Tottenham Court Road station being in Dean Street is ungodly.

Yes. Utterly depressing and shameful.

Socialism without internationalism, is it? Hmm, I’m sure I’ve heard something about that somewhere before.

Almost every trait you’d want in a leader is conspicuously missing. Intelligence, empathy, hard work, flexibility, charm, morality, temperance, patience, restraint, teamworking, foresight, inquisitiveness, humour, honesty, focus, consistency - he has precisely none of them.

His mind is profoundly inflexible, and he is exceptionally vain. For these reasons he is incapable of putting his own feelings & desires aside in any thought process. This isn’t to excuse him. It just makes him entirely unfit for office.

Maybe there’s a strategy here but I suspect he just believes this fully. Partly because he’s incapable of empathy: I doubt he can truly imagine inhabiting another perspective. He only likes other leaders who he sees as reflections of himself: tough, aggressive & self-interested.

I said something on Monocle 24 yesterday about this point - Trump’s refusal or perhaps inability to distinguish between his own feelings or interests & those of the US. “America First” is “Me First”, parce que “l’état, c’est moi”

OK. I found the tone of your answer extremely strong. I understand the logic of your feeling & it’s a distinction that can be important. But it’s a very common shorthand to say “the US”, “France” etc rather than “the govt of...” & you may be very busy correcting all the examples!

I understand, but I think it reflects accurately how we’re seen internationally, and reminds us that we must take responsibility for our rancid governments. Unfortunately we are quite likely to reelect this one, and I don’t think we can pretend that isn’t at some level our fault.

Really good thread from a thoughtful Eurosceptic perspective (sadly, there aren’t many of those around any more):

People who confidently assert that every political utterance is painstakingly designed to bury another in the news may want to note that since his comments about Grenfell, Jacob Rees Mogg has been locked in a cupboard in CCHQ. Not everything is a plan.

It’s a good question! I’m sure someone out there has written something good on it - I just don’t know offhand.

The Cold War is my area, but the space race isn’t, and I don’t take essay questions on Twitter! ;)
