Meanwhile, 2 years after starting to work on support for Solaris at the 2017 GUADEC in Manchester, I've finally checked in the package build recipe so we can start shipping packages in Solaris & using them to build X11, GNOME, & Mesa packages:
Open Source software in Solaris using gmake based build system to drive building various software components. - oracle/solaris-userland

(It didn't take two years because it was super-hard, but because everything else at work kept jumping higher in the priority queue, from getting 11.4 out the door to dealing with a never ending series of speculative execution issues.)

Big thanks to dcbaker and to the folks from and for their contributions on the bits in common to support Solaris & illumos based distros.

Some people won't be happy about that, given that sunpro dmake is quite some nice piece of tech :). But then, I think quite some of the fancy stuff isn't really needed or special today anymore. Still, I've never got around feeling really comfortable w/ meson instead of GNU/make

We’re not taking gmake or dmake away, just providing the support needed to build the modern desktop.

Oh, sorry, this wasn't what I meant to say :) It was basically just rambling on about meson vs. make, w/o wanting to say that either should (or would) be removed.
