Someone thought it would be a smashing idea to have a press junket in the Russian arctic circle in December to mark the all-important “88th anniversary of formation of Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Okrug”. And I would quite like to go.

The funniest bit in Khabarovsk election is that the LDPR candidate had agreed to become United Russia incumbent’s deputy, should the latter win. But despite that he still defeated Kremlin’s man in the run off. Bit of pseudo-opposition circus there.

Opposition is not the best word for right-wing populist LDPR. But this underscores the dilemma Russians face at the polls: support Putin’s United Russia or the fairly problematic, systemic opposition.

Good piece from on the scandalous election fixing in Primorye/Vladivostok a few days back, too absurd for anyone to stomach. Will be interesting to watch if the trend expands, at least in those regions allowed to have politics (not the Caucasus).
