Spain's large-scale study (61k people) indicates just 5% of its population has developed coronavirus antibodies - ie herd immunity “unachieveable” without vaccines. Largest antibody study in Europe according to European CDC.

This is bad. ICE just told students here on student visas that if their school is going online-only this fall, the students must depart the United States and cannot remain through the fall semester.

So overall Qin Shi Huangdi 秦始皇帝 can be parsed as "Fertile land with man scything wheat" "Beginning" "King with special crown/shiny head/halo" "Wand/Staff of god-like power and invulnerability". Hence "Qin First Emperor-God", or in Sinological terms "Qin First Thearch" 6/6

This is the ancient form of Di 帝, which is a bit harder to figure out, but it's probably a wooden weapon of some sort, similar to a sceptre or wand, that symbolises invulnerability and god-like or god-mandated power 5/

This is Huang 皇, it is basically a man, or specifically a king (the bottom part), with an extra shiny head/crown. Therefore "Emperor" 4/

This is the ancient form of the character Shi 始, which could be separated into a left vs. right component. The left component is a woman. The right component is probably an embryo. A woman with an embryo = a new beginning, or "First" 3/

This is Qin 秦: a six-armed man sitting on top of a tree is actually not far off. The character probably represents a person (with very fast-moving arms?) scything wheat. Much of Qin is in a fertile river basin--an agricultural powerhouse as Greg mentioned in the podcast 2/

Actually the way your kids have broken down the characters is more or less what we have to do in Chinese etymological studies! The evolution of Chinese characters is a notoriously difficult subfield, so a lot of archaeological work and educated imagination are needed. Details: 1/

Huge thanks to for the brilliant series! Today's was a cracker & inspired a Chinese lesson :) We had a go at writing Qin Shi Huang (thanks Wikipedia!) and the boys drew what the Chinese characters remind them of. How did we do, ?

This is great! If you do end up rewatching Hero, I'll be interested if you think the film is a problematic celebration of Qin Shi Huangdi and Chinese authoritarianism...!

Your views on the HE bailout align with the Conservatives, and the rhetoric of the Daily Mail and the Sun. If you don't want to be called out on this, you can start by not having the same views on UK HE as the Tories and right-wing newspapers. 2/2

Again, they are called Vice-Chancellors (VCs), not Vice-Principals (VPs). Your original tweet say "they have been enjoying money for old rope"--this is a non-specific pronoun that, to me, doesn't refer to VCs but universities including their staff. 1/

Despite taking the piss out of Unconscious Bias training, I do take the view that it's useful and necessary because I've very low expectations and a dim view of humanity.

Thanks. And we have been saying that your views on the UK Higher Education bailout specifically align with that of the Conservatives and shares the same rhetoric as the Daily Mail or the Sun.
