if you're following the Iowa caucus, I suggest this results page from the @DMRegister: features.desmoinesregister.com/news/politics/…

nevertheless thanks for the info. a constructive conversation with someone i disagree with is way more valuable to me than a like or a rt.

whether technology exists or not is irrelevant to me ... what people are saying is 'impossible' is a product, not a technology. we have the technology to do a lot of things, but until a product can be made profitably we don't use the technology at scale.

Boeing gets like 20 billion a year from the department of defense. auto industry gets billions in bailouts. I'm not sure it's really reasonable to think about any of these sectors outside of the context of federal spending, which was actually the point of the tweet re geopolitics

Think about the whole vertical: 45min point-to-point long distance travel on a spacex starship, vtol from landing pad to destination city, car in tunnel under the city. each leg of trip owned by a different Elon company. that's the architecture.

Thanks, this is great stuff. I'll read through it. The list of things that Tesla/SpaceX has done that people in legacy industries have said is impossible is really long, so of course I'm reading this with a healthy dose of apprehension.

I'd love recommendations on specific constraints that I may not be considering. But to me they've already got the powertrain pretty close to what they'd need for short range. The problem is of course unlike jet fuel tanks, batteries don't get substantially lighter when underway.

energy density to weight is the principle constraint, and they should get there by ~2028 assuming their 5% yoy improvements continue. what am I missing?

I think most people in the political analysis world know that Iowa is a test of a campaign organization’s strength and strategy (because of the caucus mechanics) not of “electability” (south carolina is the electoral base litmus) twitter.com/rbreich/status…

once @tesla batteries hit 400 watt hours per kg, they will be able to make an vtol aircraft and no one sees it coming. it’s america’s largest capital goods market. this is only the beginning of a economic revolution that will fundamentally change the geopolitical landscape.

if you asked the democratic candidates to say “stolen native land” during the debates, who do you think would?

the US is already beginning to experience this phenomenon in our politics. there are quite a lot of people in this country who literally cannot have a three part conversation with each other before refusing to communicate any further.

eventually we will be using words and phrases in a completely post-geographic, post-internet way and as a result find it difficult to communicate in a mutually intelligible way with people from distant internet niches.

this linguistic shift is going to be a big deal ... participating socially on the internet will be a crucial part of literacy. of course this has already happened to some degree. but mostly we’re just repurposing pre-internet figures of speech.
