OK I’m biased — my wife works there — but ⁦⁩ Axios World newsletter is consistently one of the smartest and punchiest takes on all things global. ⁦One of my favorites. Check it out.

Mike Morell among the smartest, most decent colleagues I worked with during nearly 25 years in government. And he’s just as good a podcaster.

Facts: Migrant border crossings declining for past 2 decades. Most heroin enters thru legal ports of entry, not open areas of border. Immigrants less likely to commit crimes than native-born. State Dept: “no credible evidence” terror groups sent operatives to enter thru Mexico.

You don’t dispute picture of increasingly dangerous world more like 1930s than the end of history. So, my friend, over to you. What should we do to advance our security, interests & values? This is convo we need to have and hoped our piece would help provoke. Happy new year!

Yes, end the endless war in Afghanistan but not with an impulsive, non-considered withdrawal at very time we’re negotiating w/Taliban. And as I recall there was bad intel before Iraq — but also as we write “misguided strategy” and “inadequate planning.” 3/4

We ought to be able to distinguish between large scale, open ended deployments (which I oppose) and targeted, CT focused missions like Syria that can help keep terror groups on their heels and other combatants off each other’s throats. 2/4

Joe, love that you never pull your punches! Hope folks read for themselves. We put diplomacy first. But wishful to think it should not to be “supplemented” by deterrence. We spotlight military budget constraints & hard choices & need to invest at home...1/4

Our first president could not tell a lie. Our current president cannot seem to tell the truth. This is not normal. No American should accept it. No policy is worth it.

Which he wanted to leave off 461 Ocean Boulevard because it wasn’t up to par! And even better in concert — still a highlight of his show.

Today we think about the enduring message of a young couple turned away because there was no room, only to give birth to a child in a humble stable. The world is filled with millions seeking refuge, and we are all like innkeepers—let us choose wisely in how we treat them.

Never forget: this is not normal. No American should accept this in our president. No favored policy can justify it.
