I tend to think personal brand mode is a function of televisual ideals imported from pre-digital media ecosystem. Those ideals don't survive the conditions of fully internalized digital media ecosystem.

do you think televisual ideals are the product of an environment with lots of spectators and very few participants? the tv medium assumes the audience is an undifferentiated mass that can’t talk back. creates the 1:many broadcast mode that we associate with personal brands

I feel it's more intentional. Part of a larger trend of the lo-fi/grunge aesthetic that's popular now. There still is very much a right and a wrong way to present yourself online.
