I'm not sure I would agree. I would agree that you need to understand how something works to break it, or the process of how it is made to understand where errors may slide in. But that doesn't seem to necessarily imply that you need to know how to make it.

It sounds like you have your reasons why you aren't a Xilinx fan. Would you be comfortable with sharing them? I'm looking to experiment with FPGAs and am still undecided about what hardware to pick.
