Slack closed my account today! I’m a PhD student in Canada with no teammates from Iran! Is Slack shutting down accounts of those ethnically associated with Iran?! And what’s their source of info on my ethnicity?

We don’t care about their platform. But all of a sudden, you lose access to whatever you had saved, notes, files,... all gone with no warning. It’s like you wake up one day and Google closes your gmail.

As someone with the misfortune of working on cryptography fairly often.... the culprit here is the US Government. I seriously doubt slack had any say in the matter. They had to choose between compromised security or shutting down the service. And yes it sucks.

Slack is a US company and as such, they have to comply with regulations or shutter the service. It sucks but that’s our government right now.

I’m in Canada No ties to Iran No teammates in Iran! If using slack is against US sanctions, the same applies to google, twitter, facebook... Basically, we should ethnically profile people and stop giving services to certain ethnicities. Tomorrow, Iranians can’t ride the bus.

It may look bad but the rules are clear and if someone is so identified there is only one corporate response. The specific order might be secret, and the silence would be

Google (Cloud at least) does drop traffic coming from Iran and other countries required by US embargo law)

I’m in Iranian! This is my ethnicity. Not giving service to someone because of his ethnic profile is discriminating. I don’t reside in Iran Have no professional relations with Iran, neither my teammates

same issue for me. I'm from Belgium. I travelled to Iran a few years back in time. I think Slack deployed a new broken version.

I saw their reply where they say that maybe an IP associated to your account was from Iran. Did you maybe originally create the account while still there? While still unfair, would look less creepy to me

I did not. But even if I did, I should feel comfortable recognizing myself as Iranian. Imagine a highly an African-American asked to recognize himself as white not to be discriminated against. Ethnicity is no reason to discriminate!

I started using slack some time in 2016 or 2017 while in Canada. The account was created in Canada. I can’t say for sure if during a two week visit to Iran (more than 6 months ago) my slack app had any data tranmission or not.

Yes. I lost access to all 4 workspaces I'm using. I'm in touch with Slack to get this resolved. I'm pretty sure it's a huge mistake on their end.

Not looking forward to it. Our team should look for non-American alternatives. Wish they had sent a 24-hour warning to copy my data though

No traffic from Iran. I live in Canada. All my team members are either in Canada or US. I wonder how my account was associated with my ethnicity and how/where they digged this info from.

Maybe I’m just a PhD student and adapt to whatever medium is provided to me. e.g. Google used slack for some intern communications; what other options did I have?

Interesting. One trip Several years back. Did you use slack when you travelled to Iran? I’m trying to find the root cause of the ban.
