thats always been the case, but the degree of reciprocal empathy (or lack thereof), code switching, and other things is a much broader birth than say 10 years ago. i come from a pretty privileged background and able to entertain a lot of it but fuck if its not exhausting.

ill also be blunt: the current life exp of guests vs lives of workers is so starkly different writ large, & attitudinally rough. you’ve got to have a) a strong hospitality training game b) high overall emotional resilience and c) willingness to engage w/ people who aren’t “us”

this feels like a consternating consideration of the now. the ability to build regulars in periods of aggressive urban transition seems an impossibility. but the old reliable feels intrinsic to building spaces not only of character, but that can build social investment in place

more shops are opening near where baristas live; with minimum wage increases makes wages more competitive and if tips line up, why make the commute into manhattan from prospect lefferts, jackson heights or the bronx?

As we enter Passover this evening, I urge my fellow Jews at their seders to invest energy and dialogue in communities that remain bound in the chains of oppression that exist today. Show your solidarity with them this week. Chag Pesach Sameach.

Bend the Arc: Jewish Action 21h
On , Jews across the world sit down to seders and tell the story of our liberation. Tonight, we remember that none of us are free unless all of us are free. No bans. No walls. No detentions or deportations. An end to bigotry and white supremacy. Chag Pesach Sameach!
