The second best thing to watching a Super Bowl in person: watching @calebwatney watch the Chiefs win

A couple of books! The German Hansa, David Conrad’s Empires of Medieval West Africa, King Leopold’s Ghost (not about trade but deeply haunting and worth reading)

It is SO weird to be knocked off your feet when you’re used to running a million miles an hour at all times. Feeling very humbled. Also congested — definitely that.
Hope you’re feeling better soon :/

Good question! I hadn’t realized there were such strong trade networks in Africa. E.g. the Mali empire’s gold trade, which spanned a good chunk of West Africa + linked it to North Africa.

Reading the German Hansa again! Also later but amazon.com/First-Modern-E… is probably the most comprehensive source on Dutch economic history

Getting sick is generally not fun, but it also provides the perfect excuse to read more than you ever really wanted to know about 13th century trade routes, so it’s impossible to say whether or not it’s bad

Some of this might be the fact that at 6’3” (4”?) you’re the guy who almost gets assaulted every time it’s raining by pointy ends.

100%. The fact that they have a guard there who spends more time directing customers to the bathroom than to the library is even more 🥴🥴

Lmao, my insta story from when it opened:
It’s actually a pretty interesting story! They made a deal with the Carnegie Fdn to maintain it for (I believe) 5? years. Different form of noblesse oblige I guess — the alternative was that it just wouldn’t get renovated. pic.twitter.com/94abF7kVIE

❤️ this old AT&T telephone ad. Gave Americans a peak at the massive Bell Labs effort — & of those “unseen couriers of the spoken word.”
