This blog post was authored by and myself, but the number of people who worked their ass of to get this out the door just wouldn't fit on the page. I'm so proud of what we did to make GKE and the internet more secure.

The main one being developed by sig-storage is VolumeSnapshot, but we are also working with sig-apps to develop higher level application snapshot and backup constructs.

If CSI was truly LCD, the only API it could have is NodePublishVolume. Even dynamic provisioning is not supported by all drivers.

From that POV, CSI is not a LCD API

There's already many features in the CSI spec that don't work across ALL storage providers. Raw block, single vs multi writer, resizing, snapshots, etc. If you want portability, you need to choose a storage backend in each env that supports all the capabilities you want.

Not familiar with service meshes. Are each of their APIs portable across environments? Sounds like at least Ingress is not. I'm trying to understand at what level SMI is trying to unify things.

The biggest value I see in StorageClasses (and CSI) is the portable API across environments, especially because many storage systems only work in certain providers.

Out of these features, my understanding is that many storage systems do support them so that's why we are considering adding them into CSI. Agree we shouldn't add something for only one vendor, but multiple seems reasonable.
