'Dum spiro Spero' (while I breath, I hope). This poignant message from Charles I, signed CR, has been discovered in a book he read while he was a prisoner. The book belonged to his attendant, Thomas Herbert, who later wrote about his time with the king.

Today in 1566 James VI of Scotland/I of England was born. He became king of Scotland at 13 months after his mother Mary Queen of Scots abdicated. In 1603 he united the crowns of both countries as the first Stuart king of England. Img via Wikimedia Commons.
