Wondering what it would be like if programs that have a notion of “tabs” or “windows” got rid of them, and focused on just presenting/editing one file/page/note, and left the tabbing/windowing and other multiplexing stuff up to the operating system.

That sounds really interesting! Do you plan to release the slides afterwards and/or happen to know whether a recording of the session will be made available?

If we count future instructions, SQRDCMLAH must be a pretty strong contender too. Not to forget gems like SQSHRUN2, LDUMAXALH, LDEORALH. I wonder how few instructions you can get away with to cover the entire alphabet, if it's even possible!

security warning: it is possible, under certain conditions, to read some bits of information from a LaTeX error message, which in a low but nonnegligible fraction of circumstances could theoretically be used by an attacker to figure out why the build failed

1/ I used to think specialized software to replace messy spreadsheets was unequivocal progress. Now I'm more conflicted. Feels a bit like saying "Find the people who are still cooking at home, and sell them more restaurant food"

This is my new favorite galaxy brain stackoverflow answer: abusing double-precision float behavior to make discontinuous CSS rules. It works and I truly hate it.

Software interfaces undervalue peripheral vision! (a thread) My physical space is full of subtle cues. Books I read or bought most recently are lying out. Papers are lying in stacks on my desk, roughly arranged by their relationships.

I'm amused by how the hierarchical filesystem began as a concept for end users: 'your data & documents are files that go into folders!' but more and more, 'files' have morphed into something vestigial which only matters to programmers and to the operating system

Really pleased about this! Looking forward to talking more about all the work that went into this project, and how these ideas could be taken further, in San Diego next year (for my first ever academic conference and publication!)

We worry so much about reusability. It's nuts. 90% of written code never even survives to shipping (it gets rewritten at some point), let alone reuse. Optimize for refactoring, which is often in direct opposition to reusability.

when you learn how to use a piece of software, you're not just learning hotkeys and buttons; you're adopting this ontology that the software maker was swimming in

Tools for thought are a beautiful idea—inventions which can “change the thought patterns of an entire civilization.” But that’s a 30 year old quote. Why are they so hard to make? and I try to answer that question and suggest paths forward:

We're in this awkward transitional phase where half the important things are Files and half the important things are URLs and there's no coherent/good way to organize them together.
