Oh, the 'Mar' thing: we have a tendency in the UK to give foreign-sounding nicknames to rubbish places so they dound fancy (e.g.Costa del Trecco for Trecco Bay). Our Brynmawr is a bit shady, so pronouncing it Mar/del Mar would be apt! Might see if I can get it to catch on... ;)

"Mawr" is monosyllabic, so the sound in the middle is the diphthong [au̯] (<w> does exist as a vowel on its own, just not here). The tricky thing is it slides right into the rhotic 'r' at the end which is where people get stuck, hence these approximate pronunciations.

"mah-wuh" really makes me cringe, but given it's a virtually 100% Eng speaking area I suppose I should accept that this is how it's pronounced now! *Rocks in corner* "I am not a prescriptivist, I am not a prescriptivist..."

Oh I hadn't thought of that ('Mar' does sound more exotic..!). "Mawr" is a bit of a shibboleth over here: pronunciation reveals if speaker speaks Welsh. Interesting* that both of these Bryn Mawrs are in Eng speaking areas yet both 'mispronounce' in a completely different way.

Ooh this interests me for different linguistic reasons: am I to take it then that in the US you pronounce the 'mawr' as 'mar'? I work near a town called Brynmawr in the UK and non-Welsh-speaking locals get around the tricky 'wr' combo by saying 'Bryn mah-wuh'. Interesting!

I remember overhearing the Fr exchange kids describing me as 'that girl with the elephant paw trousers'. I was mortified. Now, I'd kill to be as cool as 14-year-old me whose trousers were so massive my wild ginger hair, milk-bottle glasses and gappy teeth didn't get a look in.

My favourite trend this year is how anybody over 30 has given up on trends altogether and now just dresses up as the cool teens they wanted to be between 1994 and 2001.

To summarise, they *all* want to invest more in the NHS, education, social care, early years support & mental health provision. Yay, us. If *only* they’d been in power for the last 9 years to make these commitments happen.
