Don't worry you can reduce that to dimensional analysis and solve it with DEEP LEARNING

Keyword being continuous. Best if you go up a little, then come back down, then rinse and repeat. Fewer and fewer do that though. These days in engineering, it's been like watching someone theorize about throwing basketball while they only ever sit on the bench

Today I learned you can move a screenshot area by holding the spacebar. 🤯

I wanna non-ironically advocate for the “organic food” of software. A return to the basics of good software, free from all the layers we’ve pretended to have provided more ROI that they really did. You can still use tools and abstractions and libs, but in moderation.

Oh I don't disagree on these specific regressions. But I feel that deps management hasn't regressed as much? I get your point though

I'm looking forward to your stuff, though on this matter, I'm not sure a solution to deps that is tied to an IDE would be satisfactory?

That's why small, dependency-less "solve your own last mile" libs you can easily integrate through even dumb methods, e.g. vendoring, are super appreciated. Tweak their code a bit, no need for a complete rewrite. Trying to foster that for our own community. Hard to convey though

Oh no, modeling is needed. It's just hard to convince folks not to put the cart before the horse

Otherwise folks start "modeling" things starting from the language feature/UI library backward to UI. It's annoyingly obvious but it's hard to convince folks to stop going that direction

HAH. You don't know how much I'm agreeing right now =D That's what I keep telling people

I'm almost giving up asking folks to care about spacing when they reinvent GUI toolkits

One thing I'd love university to teach: a software eng class for spotting when you _cannot_ modularize, and how to properly deal with it and build a maintainable centralized system. If folks don't try to cross-cut where there's nothing to cut, much code would have been easier

We updated all the Reason code at Ahrefs to BuckleScript v7 🎉 The performance improvements are really incredible! These are times measured for clean builds for some of the tools (`bsb -make-world` after `bsb -clean-world`). Some of the builds run almost twice as fast now! 😮

I wasn't talking about UI libs though? Just language compilation time. And I don't really disagree. It's hard to get the rendering right when you have a GC. OCaml's native GC goes further than others, but yeah

Yeah we worked super hard to keep BuckleScript's compilation time good and reliable. Interestingly, I've found that compilation time is indicative of a language's overall philosophy. Faster compile usually means prioritization of more pragmatic features, etc. Check for yourself!

That went really well! Next one's likely in two weeks (or not. Stay tuned). And likely earlier & recorded.
