Here’s a thread synopsis of the podcast.
The first five minutes or so are about my Buddhist practice and work background.
A substantial first part of the conversation focuses on my series of journal posts exploring Culadasa’s TMI system.

I had a conversation with @OortCloudAtlas for the @DeconstructingU podcast: “Vajrayana, Engineering and Jiu-jitsu”:

I didn’t yet tweet about it as I’ve been busy helping my Mum transition into a residential home.

I am a slow thinking, ponderous speaker and I recommend listening to the podcast at 1.2x or faster. As with most podcasts, that seems to improve the listening experience significantly.

We discussed whether a staged, linear progressive presentation of Vajrayana adapted to contemporary culture is possible and/or appropriate:

About half way through we’re on to differences between Shamatha-Vipassana styles of meditation and Vajrayana.

That’s a recurring theme in my TMI series of posts, particularly days 7, 9, 10 and 11:

Then the importance of approaching meditation systems in terms of their principles, functions and failure modes.
The failure mode for strictly linear progressive models is splitting (e.g. purity/impurity) which leads to a good-self/bad-self duality.

Parletre (@SpeakingSubject ) has a recent post describing this failure mode from perspective of clinical psychology:
“Life is incredibly difficult and the pull of fantasies of transcendence is incredibly strong.”

Toward the end of the podcast we get on to the failure mode of guru abuse in Vajrayana and other systems.

After we recorded I naturally thought of much I didn’t say. Some of the topics, for example, embracing conflict, might be better understood with more unpacking. I’m intending to pick some of the themes that we visited and elaborate them into posts for VajaynaNow.com

Let me know if there’s material in the podcast that didn’t make sense to you, or that you disagreed with, or is a theme we touched on that you’d like to hear more about.
