I can believe that, though I wonder how long it takes to become de-attuned and I suspect that it’s partial loss once you get past a certain level of embodied practice (in MA and in meditation).

Yeah, it’s excellent. Looked recent - but surprisingly little info about it!

Yowser. Were you able to glean any context for it from the info?

This is the most important page in the Eggplant book, imo - the ethnomethodological flip can be helpfully revelatory for those who got narrowly channelled via STEM education into a fixed mindset and find themselves depressed by or stuck and frustrated with others.

I like Chernoff’s appealing and self deprecating humor. He’s still active, age 96!

The whole interview is delightful and funny and well worth reading for an understanding of the early days of statistics, how the field developed out of the second world war and into the 50s and 60s at Stanford and MIT:

Reading Chernoff in interview with Bather in 1996 and I learned that he attributes the Chernoff bound (exponentially decreasing bounds on tail distributions of sums of independent random variables) to Rubin.

I wrote a short post about this video of the monks and the dog: “Reactions to the video mostly think it’s funny, or weird – because you wouldn’t see this in America or other Western countries. But what strikes me most is its coherence…”

Oh I hadn’t picked up on that, that’s funny. Mukpo talks about how much he changed in Scotland in her biog iirc.

I like ‘effortlessness’ as a description, it’s often used in Dzogchen descriptions.

Reflecting on Rota's characterization of Alonzo Church as "logic incarnate". It's shocking how much and rapidly one can learn from people in deep communion with their subject. Often without noticing what one is learning, including what is felt, what is omitted, & what is asked

🆕 Introduction page for Part I of my meta-rationality book. This Part explains how rationalism—the theory that formal rationality can be fully adequate—fails when it encounters nebulosity.

Always thought it meant hoardy, but looked it up and apparently it means fidgety.
