As an intellectual historian, I've found it puzzling that no one has scanned Ross Douthat's writings from the Harvard Salient, 1998-2002. So I checked out as much of it as I could and there's some pretty good stuff.

"All agree, however, that Pinochet was a villain. And therein lies their mistake... Chile had Pinochet, but other Latin [sic] countries were not so fortunate." - Ross Douthat, November 1998

Douthat's article was teased on the cover as "Free Pinochet." The back cover of a subsequent issue jokingly announced a pro-Pinochet "Rally for Justice" organized by "El Saliente"

on a gay minister's appointment to Harvard's Memorial Church: "completely appalling...Tolerance for gays means intolerance for others, namely those who cling to what the Administration regards as outdated nonsense--the idea that not all sexual behavior is morally equivalent"

Douthat had a weakness for bad wordplay, hence an article on Tufts being too accommodating of gay student is subtitled "Harvard's neighbor goes batty over homosexuality" and an article about Mandela at Harvard is "Coming To America"

last one for now: a rather fascinating and suggestive meditation on Abercrombie and Fitch, their models "dripping homoerotic energy like sweat," the music played in the Harvard Square location "blasting viciously in your ear," designed to "dazzle and discombobulate"

It only took like 30 minutes to find these quotes (I rushed--also why some of the pictures are bad). They're in everything he wrote. I have some sympathy for the argument that people's college pasts should have an expiration date but the Pinochet stuff especially seems...timely.

That a college pieces is basically the "white genocide" stuff ("breeding themselves out of history") it would be interesting for him to engage it now, given that those arguments are understood to be a fault line within the proper conservative movement versus alt-right Trumpism.
