Tropical Storm has intensified and now has max winds of 70 mph - just below strength. Should it make landfall at this intensity, it would be the strongest July Louisiana landfall since Hurricane Cindy (75 mph winds) in 2005.

According to NOAA, the odds of persisting through peak of Atlantic season have decreased considerably. Outlook issued today gives 30% chance of El Nino for August-October. This is down from 55% chance of El Nino for August-October with June outlook.

Tropical Storm has formed in the northern Gulf of Mexico - the first Atlantic named storm since Andrea on May 21. The last time that the Atlantic had 0 named storm activity between May 22- July 10 was 2009.

A powerful 6.8M jolted northwestern on Tuesday night. Officials issued a tsunami warning for parts of the coast. warnings have since expired. The earthquake was located off the western coast of about 50 km southwest of the city of Sakata.
