One more shoutout: in the conversation about supporting POC books, do NOT sleep on ’s BEASTS MADE OF NIGHT. I’m rereading in advance of CROWN OF THUNDER and it is vibrant, enthralling, deeply important. Themes of justice, oppression + an MC I want to hang out with!

this is where i tell you all that Hanna's debut, THE WEIGHT OF OUR SKY, gave me nightmares, made me cry, and is one of the most important books i've ever read. i legitimately think, once i'm done processing it, i will be a slightly different person.

So much respect. When drafts don't materialize within the first few months I start doubting so hard. But glad to know you stuck it through. I feel like the draft I'm currently working on will take that long

We're seeing a lot of this in our current subs, so a gentle reminder... If you're writing about strange little oddities and everyday magics, the term you're looking for is fabulism. Let's leave magical realism to those it belongs to—see the quoted thread.

It's the ability to put a name to grief and set it free. There's beauty in all that. There's a beauty to the whole process of growing up and discovering how fierce the human spirit is.

It's the conviction we have that makes us grip onto hope even though it hurts us. (/4)

But she pointed out that while the simple charm of childhood might be gone, there's still much beauty to be found in growing up, even in disillusionment, in seeing reality grow sharp and mean. (/2)

My friend told me about her young daughter, about how children are fascinated and enchanted by the most simple things in nature. I burst into tears. I felt how much I'd hardened and grown cynical as an adult. (/1)

It's so funny how merciless we are as writers, "Kill them all! Family, friends, lovers, all of them!!!!!!" When in real life we're all like, "omg did I hurt your feelings." *worries about that person's feelings all day long*

OH I KNOW. just turn a novel aesthetic into a business card. When asked, just silently pass it over.

Do you ever read a book and pick up on tiny, insignificant elements that you *know* about your writer friend and think, "I can *see* my friend's soul in this book" and you love it more knowing that no one else can ever write this unique combination of words, plot, & character?

I love the list of “difficult to see” aspects of culture identified here. It’s helpful to be mindful of these in our increasingly connected world.
