Yes and no. There are plenty of existing cultures without modern wealth and technology that get their needed tasks done, and take care of their members *just fine*.

NO ONE should have their sense of self worth and meaning tied to their participation in paid employment. The fact that our society has pushed this lie for generations is horrific, and causes very real harm.

I guess it was a needed social norm when we were much poorer and less technologically advanced as a society, but we're finally in a position to see a much better world without it

In the USA though, the so-called work ethic has it's roots in religious extremism, and the Puritan belief that if you weren't laboring, you *literally* were a target for the Devil.

Yeah, fair point.
At least if we like our modern standards of living and "freedoms" until recently it was hard to imagine how that could be done with everyone having the ability to not work if they do desired.
